SEASONED actress, Stella January, needs no introduction in the entertainment industry, as far as the drama scene is concerned.
Having started early in life, the founder of Mufakose Film Society, talks about the challenges of being in the filming industry as a woman.
The 54-year-old said she wants to remain a role model to young ones.
In an interview with H-Metro, January said she faced criticism from her parents when she embarked on the filming journey.
January said she had to stand her ground as her male colleagues always take advantage of women in the same industry.
“My journey wasn’t easy, when I started my parents were not supportive as they always criticised the industry kuti ndezvechipfambi so I had to sneak out wherever I wanted to attend rehearsals and performances.
“I was scared to be on TV so I chose theatre so that they won’t find out.
“My first production in front of the camera was Yellow Card and by that time I was married and, thanks to my hubby who supported my career, that’s when my parents realised that they were wrong.
“I came across many challenges in this industry but I am such a strong and nononsense woman.
“Some of our male colleagues take advantage of women by sexually harassing them.
“I urge other ladies out there to be strong and stand for yourself, respect your own body first.”
The former chairperson of Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe (WFOZ) said women in the arts industry should focus, behave and learn to stand for themselves.
“My recent production is Tangled by Rain Media, produced by Shem Zemura.
“We are on season break, it is shown on 3KTV.
“I find my inspiration from most of my fellow filmmakers,” she said.
She also featured in “Mombe Dzemashanga,” “Munombodei,” “Kusika Moto,” “Status,’ “23 Musasa Avenue,” “The Ring,” “Gringo the Troublemaker,” “Vhunze,” “Fools Day.”
