You are what you think

Most of us are guilty of adopting various nouns without proper knowledge of the effect on our lives and the direction our lives go.
Very controversial in the American black community is the debate on whether the man of colour should keep using the noun, “Negro” in reference to themselves or rather just blatantly reject and bury the derogatory term.

The writer will not take part in this debate, but will, however, submit that whether the term is used by black on black, or white on black the term still does have an effect on the personality and character of those referred to by it.

Departing from such distant examples, we have a lot of words that people have adopted and taken ownership of while not realising the negative effect they have on their character, personality and achievements. You will realise that most teens, especially those who listen to hip-hop, affectionately call themselves “hustlers”.

As depicted in most hip-hop movies, hustlers are individuals who do not have a legitimate source of employment, or means to make money for survival.
These hustlers in the movies or videos are the ones who are always struggling to make ends meet usually via illicit or illegitimate ways. They usually push drugs, guns or many other stolen or illegal materials in street corners.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary 10th Edition defines a hustler as a person adept at aggressive selling or illicit dealing or as a prostitute.
With such definitions would one seriously want to identify as a hustler even if and when media has glorified such a practice and cleansed it.

Is that the dream you have for your life? The honest answer is NO. However, with each music video you sing along to and every take you rap along calling yourself one, your mind rationalises it and whatever it is associated with it, done repeatedly you can end up accepting it as your lifestyle.

This is not just wishful thinking, it’s a fact. The law of attraction dictates that whatever a person’s mind dwells on most of the time is what they attract to themselves. So, indeed, everything you have now, you have attracted to yourself by the kind of thoughts you keep.

The Bible clearly states that, “As a man thinks in his heart so is he”, meaning that we are all products of the thoughts we harbour.
Take note that the Bible refers to thinking with the heart which at first seems to be a violation of the science or biology that we have learnt.

What the Bible means is that the most powerful thoughts are the ones that we have constantly thought over and over again that our souls begin to use those very same thoughts in determining our life. It is almost similar to the phrase we use when we know something very well or we have memorised it, and then we say, “I know it by heart”. It has become intuitive, it’s just like what instinct is to animals.

Isn’t it what repetition of music that tells you that you are a hustler and shows you a picture of a hustler does to you? Food for thought!
Guard your heart jealously for out of it comes the issues of life. Make sure that you feed your heart with the right material, so that the product you become is what you desire.

Think and grow rich.
Till next week, God bless you all
Do not allow undesirable things to seep into your heart because of you repeatedly do that you will become those very undesirable things.

You ought to use positive affirmation to make sure that your mind is saturated with positive thoughts. Each day tell yourself of the good that you want to see yourself do.
Stand in front of a mirror and tell yourself how you will become all that you want to become.

Program your mind by telling it just who are you are daily and repeatedly even when you do not see it now. When you constantly and persistently say positive things about yourself, you will begin to believe exactly that about you and it won’t take time before you begin attracting all the good things you think of yourself.

Though it seems trendy or acceptable desist from using terms that will create a negative mind-set of you; words like hustler. They are fashionable but they are also detrimental.
Think and grow rich.
Till Next week God bless you all.
