EPHESIANS 1:4
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
We always hear people saying they have decided to follow Jesus.
That may be true, but it is not really our decision. If you are a Christian, you did not choose to be a Christian. He chose you.
You are what you are by the grace of God. No man chooses God, it is God who chooses you.
Adam demonstrated it. When he disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit, he went and hid himself. He did not look for God. God looked for him.
In John 15:16-19 Jesus says: “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. [17] These things I command you, that ye love one another. [18] If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. [19] If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”
Those are the Words of Jesus.
He clearly says; He has chosen you; you did not choose Him. You are hated by the world because you were chosen.
If you do not love Him, it is because He did not choose you. If you say you do not want to be a Christian because God shows favour by choosing some and not others, you are clearly showing that you have not been chosen. If you were chosen, you would thank Him for choosing you and serve Him.
In John 6:44 Jesus said: “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
You cannot come to Christ unless God draws you to Him.
Then, it was God knocking at your heart, not you seeking God; it was God seeking you.
So, you see, the covenant is a grace covenant, because it is God’s grace calling you.
You never chose Him; He chose you.
Out of the millions in the world today, He reached down and chose you, because He put your name on the Lamb’s Book of Life before the foundation of the world. That is what the Bible said.
Before there was a world, Jesus was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
God chose you out of the world. There were many who looked like they deserved. It is like a man who chooses a woman to be his wife. She may not be the prettiest, she may not be the smartest, she may not be the most intelligent, she may be the worst in every way, but when a man loves her, all her faults are insignificant, he sees in her what others who do not love her, do not see.
That is the reason why you are holy, not because you deserve it, but because He chose you to be that way. When? Before the foundation of the world.
He owes no one any explanation for why he chose one and not the other. He does according to His pleasure and reveals His will to whomsoever He pleases.
Ephesians 1:9: “Having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed in Himself”.
Jesus said: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Heavenly Father is perfect.” How can you be perfect? It is not your perfection. It is His perfection, of His Word; that He chose you, and you never chose Him.
And He brought you into Christ. And you are secured with Jesus Christ, and just as perfect as Christ was before God.
For, you are not standing on your own merit.
You are standing in Him, with one thing, “I believe God.” We were chosen to be holy.
He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.
This means by being chosen, we were purified. We were chosen to be holy. He Who chose us, gave us holiness. We endeavour to please Him, but our election and calling are not based on our actions.
It is a finished work. That does not entitle you to be haphazard and reckless in our living. It actually as an incentive for you to please him.
If you are chosen, you act as a chosen one. If you live in a manner that does not please Him, you were most probably not chosen. Those He chose, were chosen to be holy.
