‘Young Igwe’, Douglas join hands once more

background where both their fathers carved a niche for themselves in the entertainment sector, it appears that the two are now familiar with the turf and want to carry further their parents’ legacy by holding successful shows.
This Sunday, the two will join forces at the City Sports Bar in the capital, where they are expected to enthrall their cosmopolitan fan base with the fusion of dendera and sungura.
Peter, who turns 23 this weekend, will headline the gig, while Douglas will be the supporting act. The two will also collaborate on one track they have been working on in the last few months.
But, of course, Douglas who has been working feverishly in the last two weeks for the show will use tonight’s show at the Holly’s to show that his act is getting better from the time he took over from his father, Allan.
A gifted musician blessed with good voice intonation and well-rehearsed choreography, Douglas’ stage presence often keep his fans glued to the stage. Even when he goes on stage with Peter, Douglas easily serenades and flows with the beat, right through the show.
On the other hand, Peter has shown that if given support on and off the stage, he can easily follow his late father’s footsteps, and become an icon.
From the time he held his first show last year in November, the young “Igwe”,  has surprised many fans by holding the Utakataka Band together, despite a spate of defections that at one time rocked the band.
His shows are well attended, and although he does not sound like his late father Tongai, he has branded himself well, and his fans respect him for that. Apart from managing the 10-member Utakataka outfit, Peter has had to spread his tentacles to look after his late father’s big family. At 23, faced with such mammoth tasks like a true “Igwe”, Peter has remained resolute.
He believes he can easily manage.
Speaking from his Kwekwe base on this week’s show, Peter said he enjoyed working with Douglas, adding that the two had big plans ahead.
“We have held a number of shows and we have since gelled. The response we have been getting from our fans when we hold joint shows together is amazing.
“We have been seriously thinking about working together on a musical project, so that we can put our efforts together.
“Of couse, we are yet to finalise, but something will definitely come up,” he said.
