The Young Mighty Warriors thra-shed Mozambique 4-0 in Harare two weeks ago. But it is still game on and the players, bidding for a place at the World Cup finals in Japan in August, said they are on a mission and want another victory here.
The weather is a bit humid here and the youthful players sweated it out in the heat yesterday as they loosened up with some aerobics on a pavement at their lodge in Matola, 20km outside the capital Maputo, after they were not provided with a training ground in the morning.
Mufakose Queens striker Rumbidzai Gora, who has been drafted into the team to fill the void left by suspended striker Rufaro Machingura, said they will post another comprehensive win.
“I want to prove to the coaches that I am equally good. In the first leg at Rufaro I wasn’t there but I have been given a chance and I want to do well.
“It is hot here but I have played in more humid conditions like when I went to Angola,” said Gora.
Young Mighty Warriors defender Faith Chasi, who was impressive in Harare, said she was ready for another contest.
“I am looking forward to another good game and we should even produce a better performance than the first leg because we have been working hard in training and we have corrected our weaknesses . . . We know what we want and we are excited,” said Chasi.
Assistant coach Sithethelele Sibanda, who was part of the trailblazing Mighty Warriors team which qualified for two Africa Cup of Nations finals at the turn of the millennium and is now assisting gaffer Langton Giwa, said her charges were focussed.
“We travelled well and the fact that we didn’t travel by road really helped us. We would have wanted a morning session but some of these things you have to expect them when you travel.
“We know we don’t always expect the same hospitality we give in Zimbabwe and the good thing is we managed to do some loosening up on the hard surface though we would have loved to do some ball work.
“We are treating this match as a new game and we will play our normal game — attacking from the onset — because if we sit they will attack more” said Sibanda.
Meanwhile, the team got a courtesy call from the Zimbabwean ambassador here, Agrippah Mutambara, who rallied the players to raise the country’s flag.
“You are the greatest ambassadors of Zimbabwe because you are doing very well. And you are facing a big challenge because you playing Mozambique who are coming in as underdogs after losing heavily in Harare and all eyes are on you and there is tension. The supporters would be rallying behind Mozambique but you have to ignore that and play well. The nation takes pride in you and women’s football is becoming very popular. Soccer is now a profession just like being a doctor . . . but it should also be taken seriously and you should have discipline,” said Mutambara.
