THE Zimbabwe Under-20 rugby team has been impressive in their preparations for the upcoming World Junior Trophy Southern Region Qualifiers to be staged in Windhoek, Namibia from 28 to 31 March.
Young Sables are currently camped at Peterhouse College, Marondera. Morale in the camp is high as the boys have managed to beat the local based Sables 3-0 and the senior team of Matabeleland Warriors 34-7.
Speaking on the build up towards the World Rugby Junior Trophy Qualifiers, Young Sables coach Bob Mahari said he was impressed by the performances the team has been showing during the preparatory matches.
“The way the preparations have been organised is just amazing. We have managed to win against the local based Sables and the senior team of Matabeleland Warriors, these games have helped us technically, while combination wise, we have had the chance to play various combinations and we have also managed to test the efficiency of our scrum especially in the game against Matabeleland Warriors since they have one of the bigger scrum packs in Zimbabwe” he said.

No injuries have been reported so far and Mahari is hopeful that the Young Sables will represent the nation well and qualify for second stage of the qualifiers.
The final 26-man squad will depart for Namibia tomorrow. Mahari, who will be assisted by Jeffrey Madhake in Namibia, called up foreign-based players to boost the squad that include Sam Garnett, Tinashe Chaza, Tonderai Chiwambutsa, Taine Roeflosz and Martin Mangongo who ply their trade in South Africa for Western Province, Connor MacMillan and Cameron Harrison who are based in the United Kingdom.
The winner between Zimbabwe and Namibia will play the winner between Madagascar and Kenya on 31 March, then the Southern Region Champion, will play against the Northern region winner and the teams to compete in the Northern region are Tunisia, Cote d’voire, Morocco and one other which is yet to be confirmed.
