ZIMBABWE yesterday suffered their third defeat in a row when they fell 49-23 at the hands of Canada in the final game of Pool B at Shevardeni Stadium.
The defeat means that the Young Sables take on United States in the seventh place play-off at the same venue on Sunday as both teams finished bottom of their respective groups.
This was also the third defeat to Canada at this level of the competition, with the Zimbabweans having lost in last year’s opener in Moscow, Russia.
Zimbabwe finished bottom of Pool A win no points while the United States finished with two points which came from losing with a bonus point.
The Young Sables dominated for the greater part of the first half as they spent more than two thirds of the opening period camped in the Canada half but they could not turn pressure into points.
With 31 minutes on the clock, Canada managed to encroach into the Zimbabwe half and a try from Jeff Hassler and a conversion from flyhalf Andrew Ferguson gave them the lead.
Zimbabwe captain and eigthman Marco Mama broke on the left to set up winger Justin Coles for the try and, although Sean Linfield missed the conversion, Zimbabwe took an 8-7 lead into the break.
Another penalty was soon to follow and Linfield went directly under the posts in the Canada 22 and the scoreboard read 11-7 in favour of Zimbabwe.
Charles Jiji weighed in with two beautiful tries but it was to prove a futile battle as the Canadians came back like a wounded lion and the Zimbabweans collapsed as they conceded 42 points.
