YOUTH empowerment is key in economic development and measures should be taken to ensure youths receive the right training from institutions around them. This was said by Nkulumane constituency Member of Parliament Cde Killian Sibanda during a report back meeting yesterday following his maiden speech in Parliament last week. He stressed the need for leaders to identify youths that are unemployed and help them.
“As community leaders it is mandatory that we identify the unemployed youths and ensure they enroll at vocational training centres nearest to them, this way they will acquire skills and be able to be self employed,” he said.
In his speech, he said there is an urgent need to support the growing informal sector through proportional and equitable distribution of funding so as to capitalise business projects particularly for the jobless and marginalised members of Nkulumane constituency.
During the report back meeting members of the constituency lamented that they had been duped by fake land owners and called on the MP to assist them. Cde Sibanda told the people to desist from being swayed by people who claim to own land and instead go through the right channels to seek land from the city council.
Cde Sibanda told Parliament that there were over 5 000 families in his constituency that are living in abject poverty and said this should be mitigated when resources are available.
“I advocate that there be monthly stipends that are availed to such people to cushion them against economic hardships,” he said.
The newly elected MP also told Parliament that teenage pregnancy was having deleterious effects on young girls and that it disrupts physical, educational and psychological developments of both mother and child.
