Youth Games await release of $200,000 grant

THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) is still waiting for the government to release a $200,000 grant for the National Youth Games to be held in Mutare from August 16-23. Organisers said about $850,000 is needed for the smooth running of the games. Failure to raise the required amount has left the local organising committee in limbo as most provinces have also not paid registration fees.

Registration fees are pegged at $80 per athlete and each province is expected to send about 200 athletes and officials. The fees are used to procure some equipment for use during the games.

SRC corporate communications officer Tinashe Nheweyembwa said they had sent a $200,000 grant request and were still waiting for the government’s response.

Last year, the government released only $80,000 to the SRC for the hosting of the games.

“We’re still waiting for the government to chip in, but we must remain focused and do our own thing because the grant depends on availability (of resources).

“The government is going through a rough patch at the moment and whatever amount they give us would be welcome,” said Nheweyembwa.

He also revealed that mining company Mbaba Diamonds has donated 25 tonnes of mealie-meal, 100 litres cooking oil, 200 pockets of potatoes and an unconfirmed number of beasts.

The games start on Sunday and all provincial teams are already in camp.

Participants will compete in athletics, volleyball, basketball, boxing, football, handball and netball.
