Youth Games face financial hurdle

THE Local Organising Committee for the forthcoming Zimbabwe National Youth Games is making frantic efforts to raise funds for the annual sporting extravaganza in order to meet their revised budget of $1,4 million. This comes after indications that the committee is way behind in terms of meeting the target with an official revealing that they are almost 70 percent off target.

“At the moment we are still way behind in terms of our budget but we remain hopeful that we will meet the set objective otherwise we might be forced to adjust our figures,” said the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) provincial co-ordinator Sam Dzvimbu, who heads the secretariat division.

Early this month, the committee revised their budget downwards  from $1,6 million to $1,4 million.

The supreme sports body’s head of secretariat in Bulawayo said if no progress in terms of meeting the target is recorded by the first week of next month, they would then meet to again revise the budget downwards.

“Our second and final general manager’s meeting is on next week and it is then that they will also tour the various venues and assess the progress there and by the first week of next month I am sure we will be having a clearer picture as to what we can raise,” said Dzvimbu.

At a fundraising dinner held in Bulawayo this year, about $238 000 was raised while the government is expected to contribute $150 000 towards the games.
