THE hosting of the Africa Union Region V Under-20 Youth Games comes at the right moment to Zimbabwe after having developed the economic blueprint Zim-Asset which is in line with African Union and SADC principles, a Government official has said.
Speaking at a Torch relay ceremony held at Mutare Hall last Friday, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Chris Mushohwe, who was the guest of honour, said the games would provide affirmation of self empowerment at both domestic and regional levels.
The youth games will be held from December 4 – 14 in Bulawayo.

“I am delighted that these games bring with them opportunities to develop our manpower through interactions and sharing of ideas and, above all, the opportunity of turning sport into a vibrant industry. Opportunities are also created for our industries as they supply various commodities for these games,” said Mushohwe.

He added that Government would demonstrate its full commitment and support to ensure that “necessary preparations are fully supported with both human capital, financial and any logistical support” so that Zimbabwe would host a memorable sixth edition of the games.

“As we receive and pass on the torch for the games, I urge the organisers and the participants to practise good sportsmanship through fair play and let the deserving athletes reach for greatness,” he added.

The games will run under the theme: “Reach for greatness”.
The games are aimed at strengthening the solidarity within Southern Africa region and promoting community spirit, performance excellence and ideals of peace, brotherhood and African Unity.

Among the athletes who are going to take part in the games in basketball and athletics are Tendekai Mangenge, Tanaka Dowera, Redeemer Njoyo, Caroline Mhandu, Leon Fusire, Nyasha Mutsetse, Brian Mada and Shingi Hlanguyo.

Zimbabwe last hosted a big sporting event, All Africa Games, in 1995.
Zimbabwe Athletics head coach for youth and talent Identification, Bright Nhubu, was buoyant that the young athletes would do well and raise the Manicaland flag high.

“We have confidence, but it is going to be tough. We will be competing with countries such as Botswana, Zambia and South Africa which are very tough teams and have been doing very well in international competitions,” said Nhubu, who is also the coach for middle and long distances.
