THE Visionary Cadres Association of Zimbabwe (Vicaz), a youth-led organisation, has applauded the Government for intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect young people from the scourge of substance abuse.

Speaking during the national clean-up campaign in Bulawayo yesterday, which also incorporated a drug and substance abuse awareness drive, Vicaz chairperson, Ms Prisca Chitambo Dewa, commended law enforcement agencies for their visible role in tackling the drug menace.

“Drug abuse is a serious issue in Zimbabwe, affecting not only the youth, but also professionals, including teachers, doctors and police officers. As Visionary Cadres Association of Zimbabwe, we are saying our youth is our tomorrow,” she said.

She noted that illicit substances continue to enter the country in different forms, threatening communities.

“Thumbs up to the law enforcement agencies for their role in the fight against drug and substance abuse. We urge the Government to continue intensifying its crackdown on traffickers,” said Ms Chitambo Dewa.

Highlighting the importance of safeguarding Bulawayo’s reputation as the “City of Kings and Queens,” she called on young people to live responsibly.

“While we are cleaning the city, we are also saying to the youth, stay away from drugs. There are many positive activities to be involved in. For those already vulnerable, rehabilitation centres are available to help them find better ways to cope and rebuild their lives,” said Ms Chitambo Dewa.

Drug and substance abuse has become a growing concern in Zimbabwe, with crystal meth (mutoriro), cannabis, alcohol and cough syrups among the most commonly abused substances. The Government has intensified arrests of drug peddlers while President Mnangagwa has declared the fight against drugs a national priority, warning that the scourge threatens to erode the country’s future by destroying its youth.

Civil society organisations and youth groups such as VICAZ are working with the Government and police to raise awareness, promote rehabilitation and encourage young people to choose healthier lifestyles.
