In an innovative push for improved transparency and citizen engagement in local governance, Youth Invest recently hosted a transformative workshop titled “Strengthening Local Authorities’ ICT Systems for Citizen Engagement.”

The event was held in Victoria Falls, drawing participants from Hwange Rural District Council and Victoria Falls City Council.

The one-day workshop, which attracted 35 representatives including councillors and management staff from both councils, focused on the strategic adoption of e-governance.

The training emphasised the importance of leveraging Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance communication, improve service delivery, and foster collaboration between local authorities and citizens.

Key topics discussed during the workshop included introducing ICT tools, using social media as a means of engagement, and essential components of e-governance.

Participants were also guided on utilising official websites to connect with their communities, ensuring that citizens are informed and involved in local decision-making processes.

The initiative is part of Youth Invest’s broader project, “I Belong, I Participate: Enhancing Citizen Participation in Hwange Rural District,” aimed to empower local authorities to serve their constituents better.

The workshop marks a significant step towards adopting a more tech-savvy, transparent approach to governance in Matabeleland North.

Nomqhele Siziba, the Executive Director of Youth Invest, said the project was for three years in partnership with Diakonia aimed at increasing civic participation.

Siziba further elaborated on the project’s objectives, stating, “The ‘I Belong, I Participate’ project seeks to promote robust and vibrant participation of youth and women in local authority decision-making structures and processes in Hwange District.”

She emphasised that the recent workshop was designed to enhance citizen engagement through digital platforms, enabling more effective interaction between local communities and their governing bodies.

Councillor Givemeagain Moyo of Ward 3, Hwange Rural District said that the ICT workshop was of great benefit as they learned on how ICT can improve service delivery.

“The ICT workshop was eye-opening for us as local authorities. We learned how to utilize social media for information dissemination and community engagement. We live in an era where ICT is at the forefront, and we need to adapt to these new changes,” stated Moyo.

As Zimbabwe continues to embrace digital transformation, local authorities are encouraged to adopt innovative strategies that prioritise citizen engagement and service efficiency. The insights gained from this workshop are expected to enhance the capabilities of council officials and ultimately lead to improved governance in the region.
