Zimbabwe’S youths will remain resilient in safeguarding the country’s resources and sovereignty from dominance by any form of Western influence, Zanu-PF National Secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Pupurai Togarepi has said.
Cde Togarepi said this when he met Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) vice president Ms Alicia Corredera at Zanu-PF Headquarters yesterday.
He congratulated Cuba for having the United States relax its sanctions.
“As Zimbabweans, we will remain resilient in defending our beliefs that all the resources of our country are Zimbabwean-owned and are not to be dominated by another country.
“It is an inspiration to see that Cubans have gone through a difficult time with the sanctions and they have remained resilient and loyal to their country up to now,” he said.
Cde Togarepi said Zimbabwe was inspired by the fact that Cuba stood for more than 50 years defending its interests, values and sovereignty.
He said Zimbabwe was prepared to stand by its beliefs and resist US sanctions even if they were imposed for another 1 000 years.
Cde Togarepi warned that Cuba should not relax despite the thawing of relations with the United States, which might simply be a change of tactics.
“The Americans have realised that they cannot break the spirit of the Cubans and they are relaxing those sanctions, but we are saying to our friends in Cuba, a leopard will not easily change its colours,” he said.
Ms Corredera said Cuba was willing to strengthen ties with Zanu-PF’s Youth League.
