TICKETS for arguably one of the best plays to ever grace the Bulawayo Theatre, Zambezi Express, are selling like hotcakes with the opening night and Africa Day slots already sold out.
Zambezi Express will be shown at the Bulawayo Theatre from May 20 to 30 as part of Siyaya Arts 25-year celebrations.
“Tickets have been sold out for the first night and Africa Day, while the others are selling well. I’m pleased with the response from the people. This shows that the play was a hit with people two years ago when it was shown,” said Siyaya director Saimon Mambazo Phiri.
He said those who want to buy tickets for the other days could do so at the Bulawayo Theatre Box office and other spots in the city.
“The tickets can be bought at Innov8 book shops, Siyaya offices at Stanley Hall in Makokoba, and Entertainment Headquarters in the city. We advise fans of theatre to purchase tickets early so that they don’t get disappointed,” said Mambazo.
He said the play was part of Siyaya’s 25-year celebrations that would begin on the opening night.
“Siyaya this year celebrates 25-years in the arts industry and the play would be one of the ways in which we shall celebrate. For now the play will be shown in Bulawayo not in any other city,” said Mambazo.
The play is about Mzilli, played by Makula Moyo, a boy born in a slum township who gets a chance to try out for the Big City Chief football team and leaves home via the Zambezi Express train armed only with a lucky charm from his grandmother.
When he arrives, he is confronted by a villainous gang lead by Skara and a series of challenges ensue. He overcomes them, of course, and having triumphed with the team he returns home to noisy foot-stamping celebrations.
