ZAMBEZI G&C will seek to climb out of the relegation zone when they face Golden Eagles in a crucial MCM ESTATES Northern Region Soccer League match at Ellis Robins on Wednesday.
Zambezi occupy 19th place with 40 points from 37 matches, one behind both Karoi United and Banket United, who have played a game more.
Victory would lift Zambezi to 43 points, drawing them level with Marere and Black Mambas and moving them above Karoi and Banket.
Their superior goal difference over Marere would see them climb to 15th.
The game in hand offers Zambezi an opportunity to strengthen their survival prospects before the final four rounds, which include potentially decisive meetings with fellow strugglers Shamva Mine and Banket.
Coach Charles Mutero said they must make use of this opportunity.
“We have an opportunity to improve our position, and we must make it count. We want to take responsibility for our survival by collecting points ourselves,” said Mutero.
However, they face a Golden Eagles side sitting fifth with 58 points from 37 matches.
Eagles have conceded just 17 goals, presenting a stern test for a Zambezi attack that has scored only 18 times this season.
“Golden Eagles are a strong side, so we need discipline and concentration throughout the match. We must remain organised at the back and make better use of the chances we create.”
Zambezi’s defensive record offers encouragement. They have conceded 24 goals, fewer than any other side in the bottom half, but their 16 draws underline the points lost through failing to turn tight contests into victories.
With little separating the teams around the relegation zone, converting that defensive resilience into wins could determine whether Zambezi retain their place in the league.
“The players understand what is at stake. There are still important games ahead, including matches against teams around us, but our immediate focus is on Golden Eagles. We have to approach this game with confidence and fight for all three points,” said Mutero.
