‘Zanu-PF cadres must work to rejuvenate party image’

Speaking during the Zimbabwe ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Association (ZEPPDRA) meeting in Harare on Saturday, Cde Khaya Moyo said the revolutionary party was geared towards expanding its support base and urged party members to guard against factionalism and corruption.

“As ZEPPDRA members including war veterans and war collaborators, you have a duty to fight corruption, greed and other vices, which we can ignore at our peril. We must in this effort fully respect our party constitution. The constitution has no provisions for factionalism,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.

“Whenever it rears its ugly head, factionalism must be nipped in the bud. Factionalism breeds disunity, disharmony and turmoil, which can only work in favour of our detractors. We must at all times remain accountable to the people and not to ourselves.”

Cde Khaya Moyo said measures were under way to rejuvenate the party through different projects and programmes that would cater for the welfare of its affiliate organisations under the indigenisation drive.

He said the programme would help eliminate destitution among the party ranks and file.

Cde Khaya Moyo also encouraged party members and supporters to condemn every form of violence and ensure that the party was not infiltrated by enemies.

He expressed confidence that Zanu-PF would win resoundingly in the next elections and called for the speedy conclusion of the constitution-making process.

“President Mugabe has indicated that failure to produce a new constitution leaves us with no alternative but to hold elections under the current constitution, which elections we must win resoundingly,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.

He reminded the gathering about the proud history of the country and how the freedom fighters, under the leadership of the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo and President Mugabe, fought the Ian Smith regime and defeated it.

He narrated how the nationalist sentiments grew in the early 1950s culminating in the formation of early revolutionary movements such as the City Youth League, the African National Congress (ANC), the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the subsequent formation of Zapu and Zanu, whose two erstwhile armies, Zipra and Zanla waged the protracted liberation war.

Cde Khaya Moyo also reminded the gathering about the signing of the historic 1987 Unity Accord, which brought together PF-Zapu and Zanu-PF ending the disturbances that affected mainly Matabeleland and the Midlands province.
