Harare — Zanu-PF candidates must prioritise campaigning for the party’s presidential candidate, President Robert Mugabe as they meet the electorate in preparation for forthcoming elections, Politburo member Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu said yesterday. Dr Ndlovu, the party’s secretary for education, told New Ziana some candidates were only giving themselves mileage, forgetting to also market the party’s first secretary, who is due to contest in the presidential election.
President Mugabe, who has been tipped to win, battles it out in the crunch election with four other candidates for Zimbabwe’s top job.
“We are saying we are Team Zanu PF and the president must be at the centre of the campaign. Candidates must highlight the importance of the president’s victory first, he is our number one candidate,” he said.
“Some candidates only have their pictures on their campaign posters, without that of the president,” he noted.
Dr Ndlovu, who is the former Minister for Information and Publicity, encouraged local government, House of Assembly and senatorial candidates contesting in the same constituencies to join hands in their campaigns.
Establishing teams, he said, would also assist those whose financial resources were not sufficient to back their campaigns.
Dr Ndlovu said Zanu PF had scored a lot of success in areas such as education, which the candidates could sell to the electorate.
“We have a lot to say about our party to make us win,” he said.
He encouraged other candidates who lost in the primaries to join hands and support those who are due to contestin the general elections.
Success of the party in the election would enable it to form the next government, he said.
The election signals the end of Zimbabwe’s inclusive government established five years ago. – New Ziana
