Zanu-PF conducts Mash East polls

Sunday Mail Reporter

Zanu-PF has conducted elections for Mashonaland East Provincial leadership in a development set to establish clear party structures and fill vacancies created following the ouster of a clique that was accused of attempting to topple President Mugabe.

While results of the elections were not yet out by the time of going to print, The Sunday Mail observed peaceful polls that were marked by high voter turnout.

Acting provincial chairperson Cde Aeneas Chigwedere, Minister of State for Mashonaland East Province Cde Joel Biggie Matiza, Chikomba legislator Cde Edgar Mbwembwe, Cdes Sydrack Musa, Wilbert Nyarugwe and Samuel Maisiri were vying for the provincial chairmanship while Cdes Apolonia Munzverengwi and Beater Nyamupinga were seeking election for the top Women’s league provincial post.

Cdes Farai Maimba, Kelvin Mutsvairo, Wilfred Bvunzawabaya, Wilbert Kahari, Wellington Peyama, Farai Ngondo and Dunnymore Mutyambizi were in the youth league race.

The provincial chairpersons’ post became vacant following the decision to fire Mr Ray Kaukonde from the party.

Mr Kaukonde was subsequently booted out of Parliament after Zanu-PF wrote to the legislative assembly notifying it that the legislator had severed ties with the party.

Mr Kaukonde is among the several individuals that have been suspended, fired and had votes of no confidence passed on them following revelations that they were working in cahoots with the former Vice President Joice Mujuru to destabilise the party.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail last night, Zanu-PF national political commissar, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere said elections went on peacefully and they were expecting the announcement of results as soon as the counting was done.

“The elections went on peacefully and most of the polling stations were closed by end of day and we are expecting to announce results as soon as counting finishes. The process went according to plan and everyone is happy,” he said. Zanu-PF politburo member and Senate President Cde Edna Madzongwe also hailed the party for conducting peaceful elections.

Mr Ray Kaukonde was booted out of the party after being linked to the sacked Vice President Dr Joice Mujuru-led cabal that sought to topple President Mugabe ahead of the 6th National People’s Congress last year.
