PREPARATIONS for the 16th Zanu-PF Annual National People’s Conference slated for December at Masvingo’s Showgrounds have gathered momentum with the provincial leadership having sought the needed machinery to clear the ground for pitching the tents.

About 6 000 delegates drawn from all 10 provinces are expected to attend the party’s annual event.

Masvingo Zanu-PF provincial acting chairman Cde Amasa Nhenjana said the provincial executive was moving with speed to ensure that everything is in place come December. The Politburo is yet to announce the actual dates for the conference.

He said the provincial resource mobilisation committee has covered a lot of ground with 50 beasts having been secured after provincial secretary for finance Dr Killer Zivhu pledged 45 beasts while five others will come from Central Committee member, Cde Paul Mangwana. Over and above the 50 beasts, all seven districts will provide five beasts each to make them 85.

He said individuals and companies have started depositing their cash donations into the party’s bank account with indications that the targeted figure of $50 000 will be surpassed. The Zanu-PF provincial boss also said they have organised enough accommodation for the delegates.

“We have begun the process of making sure that the venue is ready. I can say we are on track and very soon, we will start to clear the ground where we want to pitch our tents,” said Cde Nhenjana.

He said a number of local companies have offered to assist with their machinery to clear the grounds for the purposes of pitching tents, adding that a new clinic and toilets would be built.

“We have less than two months between now and December and we do not want to leave any stone unturned in our preparations. We have sought more than 80 beasts, 50 have already been confirmed and another 35 are coming from seven districts with each district providing five,” he said.

“We also had a meeting with some companies and the District Development Fund (DDF) last week. They (companies) have offered to assist us with graders and caterpillars as we intend to grade the venue.

“We will also build a clinic and toilets at the venue. We are only waiting for the local authority’s engineer to show us where we can erect the structures.”

The hosting of Zanu-PF National People’s Conference in Masvingo follows the successful hosting of President Mugabe’s 92nd birthday bash at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments which saw more than 50 000 people attending.

The province last hosted the party’s national conference at Masvingo Teachers’ College in 2003.
