ZANU PF local authorities’ primary election re-runs that were conducted yesterday went on smoothly and no cases of violence were recorded, the party’s commissariat has said.
Held in 27 wards across the country, the internal polls signal the end of selection of candidates who will represent the party during this year’s general elections set for July or August. In an interview last night, ZANU PF political commissar
Mike Bimha said no skirmishes were reported but voting would continue today in some areas where there were delays.
“The re-runs were held in areas affected by the new delimitation boundaries and some cases of violence, among other irregularities. Everything went on smoothly and in some wards, they are expected to complete voting tomorrow (today),” he said.
Asked when the results will likely be announced, Cde Bimha said local authorities’ results end at the local polling station.
“Local council primary elections results, unlike constituency results, are not announced from our office. The voting, counting and pronunciation process are done at a local level and end there,” he said.
In Harare Metropolitan, re-runs took place in Ward 28 in Glen Norah, where Cde Mary Mupindahama battled it out with Cde Champion Mazakeyo after they pulled the same number of votes during the first election. There were also elections in Chitungwiza’s Ward 2 in Zengeza West and 25 other wards across the country.
