ZANU PF Harare province has embarked on an awareness campaign on the country’s recently introduced currency — Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) — to foster its widespread use.
Speaking during a meeting with officials from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) held at the party’s provincial headquarters yesterday, ZANU PF Harare province Chairperson Cde Goodwills Masimirembwa called on all patriotic Zimbabweans to embrace the new currency.
He said illegal trading of forex should be shunned at all costs as it has the potential to undermine ZiG.
Cde Masimirembwa said the party leadership will commence disseminating information to the grassroots level about the benefits of the new currency.
“We have just concluded a meeting with officials from the central bank, who provided training to our senior provincial members regarding the significance of the new currency, its features and its stability,” he said.
“This valuable information will be disseminated to the grassroots level through our members, who will educate the public about the new currency.”
Cde Masimirembwa said the public should desist from engaging in illegal foreign currency dealings, but rally behind President Mnangagwa’s vision of fostering economic growth through harnessing the ZiG.
“I appeal to all patriotic Zimbabweans to embrace our new currency, despite the existence of other currencies currently in circulation,” he continued.
“We strongly condemn illegal foreign exchange dealers as they act as economic saboteurs and should face appropriate legal action.
“As provincial leaders, we will now embark on an educational campaign targeting business owners, retailers and public transport operators to emphasise the importance of embracing and utilising the new currency.”
The party’s Deputy Secretary for Security in the Politburo, Cde Tendai Chirau, said there was need for discipline in the market.
“The move undertaken by the police to get rid of people involved in money laundering is quite commendable,” he said.
“We urge them to go further and do thorough surveillance on the accounts of those people abusing the system.”
