ZANU PF Harare Province yesterday reiterated its call for President Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030 in recognition of his sterling service.

The resolutions were adopted during a Provincial Inter-District Conference held at the party’s Harare Provincial offices.

The conference was convened to craft draft positions for onward transmission to the national leadership through the office of the National Chairman, Cde Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri.

ZANU PF Harare provincial chairman, Cde Godwills Masimirembwa, said the province had agreed to a series of key resolutions that would shape both party and national policy.

“The first resolution on the state of the party is that Harare Province reiterates its support for Resolution Number One passed at the 21st National People’s Conference in Bulawayo,” he said.

“The resolution is that President Mnangagwa, in recognition of his sterling service to the nation, should continue in office as the President of Zimbabwe until 2030. To that end, Harare Metropolitan Province has resolved that the appropriate party and Government structures must attend to the necessary changes in the Constitution to enable this extension of the President’s term to 2030.”

He clarified that the province was not advocating for a breach of constitutional term limits, but rather a deferment of the next general election to 2031.

“As far as Harare Province is concerned, this will come beyond the term limits permitted by the Constitution. The expectation is that Parliament will play its role to postpone elections to 2031 so that His Excellency the President serves up to 2030. That is the most important resolution that came out of our deliberations,” Cde Masimirembwa said.

He also commended the infrastructural development being spearheaded by President Mnangagwa in Harare Metropolitan Province, saying this is the driving force to defer the elections to 2030.

“We already have the Trabablas Interchange, which has transformed transport in the city and we know there is work being done on the Mabvuku Interchange and other smaller interchanges. We also recognise the tremendous development in the education and health sectors,” he said.

“In particular, we thank His Excellency for the renovation works at Parirenyatwa Hospital and at Sally Mugabe Hospital. These are tangible demonstrations of his commitment to the welfare of the people.”

The conference, Cde Masimirembwa added, also congratulated President Mnangagwa for his recently concluded term as Chairman of SADC.

Delegates also passed a strong resolution on the scourge of drug and substance abuse, paying tribute to the First Lady, Dr Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa, for her tireless efforts in raising awareness and establishing rehabilitation programmes and centres across the country.

“Harare Metropolitan Province extends its heartfelt thanks to the First Lady of Zimbabwe for her sterling efforts in combating drug and substance abuse. We stand with her in saying no to this menace,” said Cde Masimirembwa.
