ZANU-PF Matabeleland North yesterday activated its provincial committee tasked with the preparation for the party’s 16th National People’s Conference to be held in Masvingo in December.
In an interview after a Provincial Co-ordinating Committee meeting in Lupane, the party provincial chairperson, Cde Richard Moyo, said the committee would largely remain unchanged after the success of last year’s conference in Victoria Falls.

The party appointed Central Committee member Cde Clifford Sibanda to deputise Cde Sithembiso Nyoni in the finance committee replacing Mr Headman Moyo who was recently expelled from the party.

“Today we were activating our committees for the conference and we did not make many changes but retained those from last year. They did an excellent job last year when we hosted the conference in Victoria Falls and if you remember, the President heaped Matabeleland North with so much praise for the way we prepared for that particular conference. These are provincial sub-committees that will work with the national committee in preparation for the conference,” said Cde Moyo.

Cde Moyo said preparations for a fundraising ceremony to raise money for the holding of the conference were also at an advanced stage.

“Sometime either at the end of October or the first week of November, we will launch our fundraising in Victoria Falls to raise $50 000 that each of the provinces is required to raise and forward to the finance department towards the holding of the conference,” he said.

Meanwhile, the province will hold a workshop facilitated by the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology next month.

The three-day workshop will be held from 6 to 9 October. “It is meant for our leadership, Central Committee members, Members of Parliament, heads of departments in the province, district chairpersons to teach them about the country’s history and that they have knowledge of the party’s ideology so that in their various positions of leadership, they impart the party’s principles to the people,” said Cde Moyo.

During the meeting, Cde Moyo called on party members to start mobilising people in preparation for the 2018 elections. He said the party was confident of winning those seats that remain in the hands of the opposition.

“We are very confident because we are busy strengthening our structures and the Government is busy implementing Zim Asset programmes. The digitisation programme for instance has seen the inclusion of remote areas who had not been receiving radio or television signals, Rural District Councils (RDCs) are busy rehabilitating roads while boreholes are being drilled to provide people with adequate water.

“In other areas there is now piped water and our Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Cain Mathema was launching these programmes in the past weeks, we want our members to tell the people of such programmes that the Government led by President Mugabe is doing in Matabeleland North.”

Cde Moyo reiterated President Mugabe’s assurances that the Government would provide food for all people affected by drought. The provincial chairperson also called on members to educate the people in their respective areas about bond notes that will be introduced at the end of October. He said there were many distortions by the opposition parties on the issue of bond notes and people needed proper education on the matter.
