The recent push by President Mugabe and Zanu PF for Zesa and Zinwa to write off utility bills owed by residents demonstrates that the revolutionary party has the interest of the people. Incoming House of Assembly members from various parts of the country told The Herald that the move showed the boldness of Zanu PF in taking practical steps to alleviate the hardships facing residents in the country.
In separate interviews, Zvimba East House of Assembly member-elect Francis Mukwangwariwa commended the step taken by President Mugabe, saying this would help lessen the burden facing people who owe water and electricity bills running into millions of dollars.
“We welcome the move. Farmers were unable to pay their debts as the Finance Minister Tendai Biti took years to pay them and in such cases, where do you think the people get the money,” he said.
Murehwa West House of Assembly member-elect Ladislus Ndoro said Zanu PF’s decision was a welcome development to farmers.
“Farmers have stopped growing wheat and other crops because of huge Zesa bills,” he said.
“We hope this move will help ease anxiety among farmers once it is effected.”
Bindura North House of Assembly member -elect, Kenneth Musanhi said the move was not just an election gimmick.
