President Mngagwa is this afternoon chairing an extraordinary Zanu PF Politburo meeting meant to consider the national hero status of Cde Jaison William Chezhira Chakaipa Chirinda.
In his brief address when the Politburo met at Zanu PF Headquarters, President Mnangagwa who is also Zanu PF First Secretary said the extraordinary Politburo meeting was called to consider the national hero status of Cde Chirinda who died on October 27, 2024.
This, he said, followed a request by Zanu PF Mashonaland Central Province to have the deceased conferred with the highest honour. He was 82.
Zanu PF Acting Secretary General, Advocate Jacob Mudenda read out the eulogy prepared by the Mashonaland Central Provincial Coordinating Committee which submitted a request to the Politburo.
He chronicled Cde Chirinda’s liberation credentials that include training in Tanzania before heading to China for further military training.
At some point, he was arrested by the Ian Smith regime for his role in fighting for the liberation struggle and was sentenced to death which was later commuted to life.
He served time in prison with several nationalists including President Mnangagwa who was equally serving life imprisonment.
The Politburo is currently considering the request behind closed-doors.
