Zanu PF chairman for Mashonaland East Cde Daniel Garwe has thanked voters in his province for giving the party large majorities in Murehwa South and Marondera East constituencies in the by-elections last month.
Cde Nyasha Masoka polled 11 125 votes to win in Murehwa South against 1 729 votes for CCC’s Rodrick Munemo, with MDC Alliance getting 309 votes and United Democratic Party polling 94 votes.
Cde Jeremiah Chiwetu clinched the Marondera East constituency after getting 9 379 votes against 1 874 votes for CCC’s Mr Simon Machekanyanga, with MDC Alliance’s Mr Thomas Tasarirenhamo getting 109 votes and Mr Moses Mandaza of ZLP polling a paltry 69 votes.
Last weekend, the Zanu PF Mashonaland East Provincial executive held a provincial coordinating committee meeting to conduct a post-mortem of the March 26 by-elections.
Cde Garwe saluted the provincial and district executives for working hard so the party remained dominant. He was unhappy with Marondera Central constituency results where the CCC retained the seat, although by a narrow margin.
That constituency includes the town of Marondera.
Cde Garwe said more should be done to ensure the seat is brought to Zanu PF during next year’s general elections.
“Discipline builds us and we need to be united as a province,” he said.
“There is need for restructuring and revisiting of our party structures. In some districts like Marondera, there is need for us to be intact as we move towards the 2023 elections.
“Let us ask our relatives and friends to come to the party. There will be a lot of activities coming up now till we get to elections and collaborative effort should be put in place.”
Cde Garwe announced that Cde Chiwetu was back as party provincial secretary for security and urged him to maintain standards which had been set in the department.
Mashonaland East party provincial youth chairperson Cde Isaac Tasikani said youths should work hard, unite and be focused to ensure the party wins the coming general elections.
“Youths will start working since they are the vanguard of the party,” he said.
“We will make sure we achieve five million votes for our party and President Mnangagwa.”
Zimbabwe will hold harmonised elections next year and Zanu PF is leaving no stone unturned to ensure it retains its two-thirds majority in Parliament and keeps the Presidency.
