Zanu-PF suspends youth league leader

The party’s National Secretary for Information and Publicity, Cde Rugare Gumbo, yesterday confirmed Cde Gatsi’s suspension.

“The decision was that Cde Gatsi’s suspension was confirmed. This means he cannot be reinstated as the chairman of the youth league in Bulawayo,” said Cde Gumbo in a telephone interview from Harare.

“However, he remains an ordinary party member for the sake of unity and is free to participate in the political activities of the party and can stand for elections in the party.”

On the circumstances leading to Cde Gatsi’s suspension, Cde Gumbo said the youth leader was accused of certain misdemeanours.

“It is alleged that he committed some misdemeanours and I cannot go into detail about that. What the disciplinary committee did was to confirm his suspension by the National Executive of the Youth League,” he said.

Contacted for comment Cde Gatsi said he had not received official communication from the disciplinary committee. “I cannot comment on the issue now because I have not yet received official communication from the disciplinary committee about that decision I am still waiting for a hearing and I am not aware that my case has been discussed. How can there be a verdict without a hearing?” said Cde Gatsi.

There has been confusion over the status of Cde Gatsi chairmanship after the national executive committee for the Youth League came to Bulawayo sometime in August and announced that he had been suspended.

The issue was then taken to the senior national leadership of the party which has upheld the decision to relieve Cde Gatsi of his duties as the chair.
