Zanu-PF to conclude outstanding issues

out the rules and regulations to guide primary polls along with discussing the party manifesto. Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo told The Herald that the Politburo would come up with positions on these issues when it meets next week.

“I am doing the party manifesto and we are now just doing the final touches to the extent that I am hopeful that it will be ready by end of the week so that the Politburo can discuss it when we meet next week,” he said.

“We are also looking forward to conclude all the other issues that have to be put in place ahead of the elections like the rules and regulations in readiness for the Politburo next week. The legal committee and the women’s league are also almost through with unifying the rules and regulations.”

The delay in the announcement of the rules and regulations to guide primary elections was precipitated by a late submission by the women’s league which proposed that they wanted female aspiring candidates to exclusively contest each other. The party’s legal committee had already drafted terms for the primary elections before the women’s lobby.

The Politburo, Zanu-PF’s supreme decision making body outside Congress, is expected to adopt the rules and regulations and the party manifesto as the countdown to elections has begun in earnest. The organ met in early May and adopted most of the rules that will guide the conduct of the elections.

The outstanding issues that remained were the issues of proportional representation in the Senate and the quota system for women.

Some of the guidelines adopted last week are similar to the ones set in 2008 but offer every member a fair chance to stand on the party’s ticket.
