User fees still paid

amounts of up to US$15 depending on the institution despite Government’s announcement recently that all women delivering at rural clinics should not pay.

A survey conducted by The Herald established that most of these institutions still charging user fees were those owned by rural district councils.

Women interviewed from a clinic in Matabeleland North province said they were asked to pay R100 while those in Manicaland said they were paying between US$2 and US$10.

Murambinda rural district chief executive officer Mrs Emily Chibvongodze said the council was not a recipient of the Health Transition Fund hence the levies.

“We cannot scrap user fees because that is the money we use for our day- to-day running of the clinics.

We are not recipients of HTF and we need to raise money for our operations,” said Mrs Chibvongodze.

The RDC runs about 20 clinics compared to five owned by Government in the district.
