THE Zanu PF Women’s League has handed over 10 000 chicks to boost the economic prospects of membership in Harare Province under the Presidential Poultry scheme.

The scheme is a brain child of President Mnangagwa meant to empower women across the country.

Handing over the chicks at Tafara Grounds, Zanu PF Secretary for Women Affairs Cde Mabel Chinomona said the initiative aligns with Zanu PF and President Mnangagwa’s commitment to economically empower women through transformative projects.

She encouraged beneficiaries to take care of the chicks and consider expanding into large-scale chicken rearing.

“We serve the purpose of fostering economic development. We must embrace and train young women to take on leadership roles in the future.

“Young women should be patient, willing to learn and prepare for their time in leadership,’’ said Cde Chinomona.

She said economic empowerment projects are designed to support women across the country, ensuring that grassroots projects receive the attention they deserve.

“Gone are the days when empowerment funds only benefitted the elite and urban dwellers. We aim to reach every corner of the country.

“The chicks we are distributing today should multiply and transform your lives.

“Every woman must be economically active,” she added, highlighting the importance of women’s participation in politics and the economy.

Cde Chinomona urged women to take empowerment projects seriously, saying women are the engine room of the party, hence there is need to be involved in decision-making programmes.

“Women are the cornerstone of every household, everyone should play a part in building the country’s economy under the mantra leaving no one and no place behind.

“We should embark in projects such as baking, farming, chicken rearing, among other projects,” she said.

During elections, Cde Chinomona said, women should take part and vote for their female counterparts

The chicks were distributed equally, with Young Women for ED, students from tertiary institutions, and party members from district structures receiving their share.

Cde Chinomona said the programme is part of the Fishers of Men initiative.

She commended Central Committee member Cde Kuda Tagwirei for building party offices in Harare and supporting party programmes at every level.

Cde Chinomona also appealed to businesspeople who benefitted from Zanu PF policies to support the party.

She said the youth should wait for their time and learn from the current leadership.

Cde Chinomona urged women to mobilise first time voters to join the party.

Zanu PF Harare provincial chairlady Cde Babra Mwale urged women to take empowerment programmes seriously.

“The project is a brain child of President Mnangagwa in line with Vision 2030. He is ensuring that no one and no place is left behind. We should understand that women are the drivers of families, so there is need to take empowerment programmes seriously to support our families,” said Cde Mwale.

National chairperson for Young Women for Economic Development, Cde Tatenda Mavetera, who is also the Minister of Information Communication Technology and Courier Services, praised the Government’s efforts to open opportunities for women in business and political leadership.

“We appreciate President Mnangagwa for creating avenues for young women to assume senior leadership roles.

“Many young women have been groomed by the Women’s League and are now serving as Members of Parliament and Ministers,” said Cde Mavetera.

The Women’s League also recognised successful women in projects such as poultry, market gardening and sewing, and presented them with tools like scotch carts, wheelbarrows, cultivators and ploughs to help expand their businesses.

Young Women for Economic Development Harare provincial vice chairlady Giana Mwerenga hailed President Mnangagwa for handing over chicks to kick start their projects.

“This is an empowerment initiative which will help women to boost their income. We are happy as the young generation,’’ said Cde Mwerenga.

Also in attendance was Zanu PF Deputy Secretary for Security Cde Tendai Chirau, Harare provincial chairman Cde Godwills Masimirembwa, Women’s League Secretary for External Affairs Cde Betty Kaseke, the league’s Political Commissar Cde Maybe Mbowa, and Secretary for Finance Cde Tsitsi Mugabe.
