Zimbabwe Cricket and the players’ union have struck an agreement which will see the resumption of the domestic fixtures and preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup next week. According to an official statement from ZC, the board chairman Peter Chingoka and managing director Wilfred Mukondiwa, held a productive meeting with the players’ representative Eliah Zvimba and the team technical staff members.
Players from the franchise and national teams had been on strike over non-payment of salaries and outstanding allowances which led to the interruption of the domestic league fixtures.
The cricket mother body, just like many other local sporting organisations, have been facing financial challenges.
“All the parties at the meeting which was held at the Harare Sports Club agreed to move forward together,” the statement said.
“The ZC chairman told the meeting that arrangements have been put in place to pay all the outstanding salaries and match fees.
“The players’ representative welcomed the announcement, saying the payment of outstanding dues will remove the sole issue that has been between ZC and the players.”
The statement also provides assurance that the domestic league will soon resume.
The Twenty20 format will take precedence over the Logan Cup and the Pro50 competition as it will serve as part of the preparations for the World Cup in Bangladesh.
“The players will continue practising and a meeting will be held on Monday to set the date for the resumption of the domestic season, which will start with Twenty20 matches in preparation for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 tournament that Zimbabwe will compete in, in Bangladesh next month.”
ZC is set to announce the final training squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in due course.
