Zimbabwe Cricket will today donate sports equipment worth US$5 000 to five centres of excellence established at schools in Harare.
ZC development manager, Nick Singo, said this is the first time that there are giving out sports equipment to the five centres to help in developing the sport from grassroots level.
Singo said the association will hand over bats, balls, batting gloves, stumps and protectors to support the five centres of excellence identified at Zengeza 4, Chipembere, Glenview 3 Primary School, Mabvuku Sports Centre and Fungisai Primary. Each centre will receive equipment worth US$1 000, which they will use in their monthly matches at Old Hararians.
“Our idea of opening the centres is going on well and we hope that the equipment will help the children to enhance their cricket skills. This is just the beginning and as time goes on we would like this project to spread to many schools in the high-density suburbs across the country.
“We want to encourage all the up-coming players to take cricket seriously and look up to our best players like Tatenda Taibu. They should be afforded the opportunity to showcase their talent now and get the best out of it in future,” said Singo.
Zimbabwe Cricket has also facilitated transport to ferry the children from their schools to Old Hararians where they will be meeting once a month with the 20 selected Under-13 boys players from each school and compete for places in the schools first team.
Singo also added that the next province in line is Manicaland, followed by Masvingo, Matabeleland and finally Midlands.
