THE Zimbabwe Defence Forces Queens netball team was yesterday rewarded for being crowned the 2013 Zimbabwe Netball League Champions ahead of this weekend’s season opening games. The ZDF Queens won the 20-team league title last year and were yet to be rewarded, but received the floating trophy and medals yesterday.

Secretary for Defence Martin Rushwaya — who is also the ZDF Queens patron — said he was happy to witness such a great event and believes the team will do well in the coming campaign and retain the championship.

“I am happy to witness this occasion and congratulate the ZDF netball team for the achievement,” Rushwaya said.
“I am grateful to the Zimbabwe Netball Association for competently running the league and happy for the corporate world and individuals who have supported the league. Many netball teams are finding it hard to compete in the league because of financial constraints so we call upon the business community and individuals to support the sport.

“The team did us proud by winning the Zimbabwe National League Championships and to come as runners-up in the pre-season tournament which was held in February. I hope you will remain diligent, focused and disciplined so that you retain the title in 2014,” said Rushwaya.

Rushwaya also paid tribute to the sponsors who supported the team to do well throughout the campaign and believes that they will continue to support the sport.

“We are happy for our sponsors FMC, Telecel Zimbabwe and Martin Tshuma for supporting the team and hope they will continue with their good performance this season,” added Rushwaya.

Zimbabwe Netball Association president Leticia Chipandu said I am very happy for the team to win the league and encouraged them to continue working hard and defend their title.

“I am happy for the ZDF Queens for winning the Zimbabwe National League Championships and I hope they will continue to work hard so that they can defend their title.

“I am humbled to present this trophy to our best team during last season and it proved to be the finest team through hard work.
The team showed passion, commitment and disciplined throughout the season.

“ZDF Queens has several seasoned players who are also part of the national team and we are happy that they are also now grooming young players for our junior teams,’’ said Chipandu.
