AS preparations for the Gutu East and Insiza North National Assembly by-elections gather pace, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has appointed constituency elections officers to preside over the polls.
The electoral management body has appointed Mr Ernest Mukwidzwa to preside over Gutu East constituency while Zelembi Lwani Dube will superintend the Insiza North by-election.
The appointment was announced by ZEC Chief Elections Officer, Mr Simbarashe Tongayi, in a Government Gazette.
“It is hereby notified that the Acting Chief Elections Officer has, in terms of section 4 of the Electoral Regulations, 2005, published in Statutory Instrument 21 of 2005, appointed persons in the Schedule to be the constituency elections officers for the constituencies Gutu East and Insiza North, who will be at the addresses specified in the Schedule, for the 14th June 2025, by-elections,” reads the notice.
Mr Mukwidzwa’s given address is Chingombe 2 Alheit High School, Ubwe village under Chief Chingombe in Gutu while Mr Dube’s address is Insiza Rural District Council.
The Insiza North National Assembly constituency seat in Matabeleland South fell vacant following the death of Cde Farai Taruvinga of Zanu PF who died in March this year while Gutu East fell vacant following the expulsion from Zanu PF and subsequent recall from Parliament of Mr Benjamin Ganyiwa.
Four candidates have filed their nomination papers at the Gwanda Provincial Magistrates’ Courts and will contest the by-election.
These are Mr Delani Moyo of Zanu-PF, Mr Thabani Mlotshwa of Zapu, independent candidate Mr Lesley Dube and Mr Mbongeni Moyo of the Zimbabwe National Revival Party.
In Masvingo Province, the three candidates that will contest the Gutu East seat are Zvarevashe Masvingise of Zanu-PF, Mr Gift Gonese (independent), and Mr Zivanai Nzvenga of the National Constitutional Assembly.
