THE United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the African Development Bank have donated two 4×4 vehicles to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZEDTC) for disaster management in cyclone affected areas.
AfDB Country Manager, Moono Mupotola, said:
“When future shocks hit, Zimbabwe will not experience the same level of devastation and loss thus AfDB remains committed to supporting the achievement of the sustainable development goals for Zimbabwe by promoting sustainable resilience and recovery.”
Acting Country Manager for UNOPS, Nawal Aminath, said they work closely with ZETDC on one of the components of Electricity Distribution Networks.
“We acknowledge their commitment to restoring high levels of service for the communities of Chimanimani and Chipinge. The Minister has always made time to support the project,” she said.
Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Marian Chombo, expressed gratitude for the AfDB and UNOPS donation.
“I am indeed privileged once again to officiate at this gathering where we are receiving a generous donation from AfDB towards the capacitation of the Ministry of Energy and Power Development under the AfDB Post Cyclone Idai Recovery Project.
“As we continue to restore normalcy to the livelihoods of the communities affected by the devastating Cyclone Idai, the Government is undertaking various projects with support from partners in restoration of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, houses, sanitary facilities and other services,” she said.
The handover ceremony took place under the Post Cyclone Idai and Kenneth Emergency Recovery and Resilience Programme, a four-year US$25 million project aimed at restoring service levels of transport, power, water and sanitation, and agriculture to the most impacted districts of Chimanimani and Chipinge; as well as strengthening the Government of Zimbabwe’s capacity in disaster preparedness and management.
