THE Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) has given people and organisations with generators with a capacity of more than 100 kilowatts up 7 August to register them with the authority or face prosecution. In a statement, Zera said failure to comply with the directive would see the offenders liable to prosecution for contravening the Electricity (licensing) Regulations, published in Statutory Instrument 103 of 2008.
“The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority would like to advise all stakeholders in the electricity sector that electricity generators and stand-by electricity generators having a generation, transmission, distribution or supply capacity of 100KW and above should be registered with Zera. Any person who contravenes the above regulations shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level five or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months or both such fine and such imprisonment.”
Registration forms were obtainable from Zera offices or downloaded from its website.
Meanwhile, Zera intends to carry out a national energy efficiency audit in all sectors of the country’s economy.
It said funds for the exercise had already been set aside during the 2013 financial year.
“The funds will be used to cover eligible payments under the contract provision of consultancy services for carrying out the national energy efficiency audit for Zimbabwe.”
