Zesa restores power to Kezi

Civil servants and villagers had resorted to bathing in Mwewe River raising fears of an outbreak of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery and bilharzia.
Businesses were reported to have incurred losses that ran into thousands of dollars due to the power cut.
In separate telephone interviews, a shop owner and a civil servant in Kezi said they hoped that the restoration of power on Monday was a sign that the problem had been rectified.
“Although the electricity was restored, we had countless losses. Meat such as beef and chicken rotted away in the two-week period.
“We hope that we can recover,” Mr Tedius Dube, a shop owner at the business centre, said.
Mr Dube appealed to Government to end the monopoly of Zesa and pave way for other service providers.
“It seems that Zesa is failing to provide adequate electricity for the whole nation. Government should end its monopoly and let other players come in,” he said.
A civil servant who spoke on condition of anonymity said she was relieved that power had been restored but bemoaned the time taken by Zesa to restore power.
“The whole holiday period, there was no electricity and I did not enjoy it. At least power is back and we can now bath in our homes,” she said.
She appealed to Zesa to act speedily next time there was a problem as faults affect other essential services.
“Two weeks without electricity and water was a nightmare. Zesa should act swiftly if and when there is a fault in the area.
“They should remember that a Zesa fault affects other essential services like in our case, water,” said the civil servant.
