LIGHTS on and generators off!
Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has supercharged the nation’s electricity supply, pumping out a sizzling 1 553 megawatts (MW) on 2 May 2025 — a fiery leap from 1 304MW just the day before.
The power surge is thanks to Hwange Power Station flexing its muscles with a monster 1 078MW, up from 979MW, while Kariba finally gave a little spark of hope, adding 400MW — still far from its glory days due to stubbornly low water levels.
Independent Power Producers (IPPs) chipped in with a modest 75MW, barely moving the dial from 73MW, but every watt counts!
The power boost couldn’t have come at a better time — just as the winter wheat season kicks off. Government has ring-fenced a juicy 150MW just for wheat farming, up from last year’s 120MW, in a bold move to keep irrigation systems humming and silos filling.
Farmers, rejoice. ZESA’s bringing the heat — now let’s grow some grain!
