THE city centre turned into a creepy crawl zone last night as an unexpected swarm of locusts swooped down under the cover of darkness — and their target? The Chicken Slice building at 9th Avenue and Fort Street!
WITNESSES described the scene as “biblical,” with hundreds of insects blanketing walls, pavements, and streetlights, turning the CBD into a buzzing frenzy. Insects are a common sight in rural fields — but this urban ambush raised eyebrows, questions… and even plastic bags!
Enterprising residents took the bizarre moment as a blessing in disguise — scooping up the crunchy creatures into 2kg bags, some joking:
“Sadza is sorted. God just sent the relish too!”
But while some saw a free meal, others saw a dark omen.
“Locusts don’t just show up in town,” one passerby whispered. “This could mean hunger is coming… or something worse.”
Known locally as madhumbudla, the bugs are usually spotted feasting on millet and sorghum in rural areas, and reports confirm recent sightings on farmlands. But no one can quite explain why they’ve buzzed into the urban jungle.
Panic? Profit? Prophecy?
The insects have stirred up more than just wings… they’ve stirred the city’s superstitions.
Keep your windows shut… they may be back.
