Zesa system disturbance plunges city into darkness

at Kariba North Hydro-power Station.

Zesa Holdings spokesperson Mr Fullard Gwasira said details of the cause were still sketchy last night.
“Indications are that there was a system disturbance leading to loss of power generation at Kariba Power Station. We are, however, trying to establish the cause of the disturbance although communication is still difficult,” he said.

The blackout hit central Harare at 6:50 pm and was also reported in Gweru, Chinhoyi, Masvingo and Beitbridge. It affected cellphone network services and internet connectivity.
There were fears that criminals could take advantage of the darkness and motorists had to be cautious at traffic controlled intersections because traffic lights were not working.
