WITH the 2024 All-Africa Golf Team Championship (AAGTC) quickly approaching, the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) is urging not only golf enthusiasts, but all Zimbabweans to show their support for this highly anticipated event.

The continent’s most prominent amateur golf competition is set to take place from October 27 to November 2 at the country’s oldest golf club, Bulawayo Golf Club.

As the pinnacle of amateur golf in Africa, the championship is a significant event that deserves widespread support from the community.

In light of this, the ZGA hosted a fundraising tournament at Bulawayo Golf Club last Saturday, where association president, Martin Chikwana, spoke about the importance of rallying behind the teams and the event.

He stressed that support comes not only in the form of financial contributions but also attendance during the playing days to show solidarity for the sport and the participating athletes.

He said by coming together and showing support, Zimbabwe can make the 2024 AAGTC a memorable and successful event.

“We want to say to everyone in the Bulawayo community that we have a very big event that we must support. Support doesn’t necessarily mean in terms of putting in money, or resources but even your presence; coming to see these guys from all over Africa.

“This is the oldest club in the country and it’s something that we are looking forward to as an association and as a country. Yes, we are struggling with resources but we are still trying to put together resources, to put together the event and I am sure with everyone’s support, we will be able to host these countries.

“We should be able to see you again in other events. We will continue to try and rally support, raise awareness that we are hosting this prestigious event at this club, in Bulawayo, in our beautiful country,” said Chikwana.

The AAGTC is the premier amateur golf tournament in Africa, bringing together the best golfers from 20 countries on the continent.

Held biennially, the championship is a highly anticipated event that showcases Africa’s finest golfing talents. Morocco, the defending champions, dethroned perennial winners South Africa in the previous edition held in Egypt in 2022.

This year, the 20 participating teams will converge on Bulawayo on October 27, with the official opening ceremony and practice rounds scheduled for the following day.

The tournament’s first round commences on October 29 and concludes on November 1, culminating in the prize presentation for the fourth and final round. The participating teams will then depart the country on November 2, marking the end of the tournament.

Beyond being a golf tournament, the AAGTC embodies the spirit of unity, competitive spirit and pride among African nations, much like the Africa Cup of Nations in football and the Rugby Africa Cup.

Hosting the AAGTC is a mark of prestige for any nation, serving as a cultural and social celebration of Africa’s diverse heritage.
The event provides a platform for showcasing Africa’s emerging golf talent and offers a crucial opportunity for young players on the verge of stardom to gain exposure and experience at the highest amateur level.

As AAGTC 2024 draws nearer, the excitement and anticipation continue to build, attracting officials from esteemed organisations such as the Africa Golf Confederation and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A), further amplifying its international significance and prestige.

The AAGTC is not just a golf tournament, but a unifying event that highlights Africa’s best golfing nations and promotes the continent’s rich cultural heritage. Moreover, the tournament leaves a lasting legacy, providing an opportunity for young golfers to flourish and advance to world-class levels in the sport.
