POLICE in Bulawayo are investigating the murder of a 40-year-old man from Matsheumhlope suburb, who was allegedly killed by three suspects on Monday evening.

The deceased, Lugwasyo Mudenda, was returning home from Ascot Shopping Centre with two friends at around 9.30pm when they were approached by three men who claimed to be stranded and in need of directions.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspects suddenly became violent after getting directions from the deceased.

“On Monday at around 9.30pm, the now deceased and his two friends were going home from a beer drink when three suspects approached under the guise that they were looking for directions to a spot where they intended to board transport to Matopos,” said Insp Ncube.

“The deceased then advised them to get the transport in the central business district. The three men suddenly turned violent and started to attack the deceased and his friends.”

Mudenda attempted to defend himself but was overpowered. His friends fled in different directions, leaving him to face the attackers alone. The suspects reportedly used knives to stab Mudenda, leaving him unconscious at the scene.

Mudenda’s friends returned and called an ambulance, but he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital due to excessive bleeding.

Insp Ncube said they have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, who are still at large.

“We are appealing to anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact any nearest police station,” he said.
