ZIMBABWE Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) chairperson, Ms Fungayi Jessie Majome, on Wednesday, paid a courtesy call on the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), during which she underscored the commission’s commitment to strengthening ties with
the UN as a strategic partner in advancing human rights and administrative justice in Zimbabwe.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration in the promotion and protection of human rights, urging the commission to ensure that these issues are fully integrated into the Government’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2).
Ms Majome said through the support of UN agencies and other partners, the commission has successfully raised human rights and administrative justice awareness.
“Through the invaluable support of UN agencies and our dedicated partners, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission has been able to reach communities across the country with vital information on human rights and administrative justice,” she said.
“This collaboration has strengthened our ability to empower citizens with knowledge of their rights and the mechanisms available to protect them.”
Ms Majome said awareness is the first step towards ensuring that every Zimbabwean can live with dignity, equality, and freedom.
“Our mandate is to deepen this culture of respect for human rights and accountability in public administration,” she said.
“With the continued partnership of stakeholders and the active participation of citizens, we are confident that Zimbabwe can build a society where justice is not only promised in the Constitution but also experienced in the daily lives of our people.”
UN Resident and Humanitarian coordinator Mr Edward Kallon said the commission must ensure human rights are mainstreamed into the Government’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2).
“The Commission must take bold steps, rights are not treated as an afterthought, but are fully mainstreamed into the Government’s NDS 2,” he said.
“Only by embedding these principles at the heart of national planning can we guarantee that the rights of women and other vulnerable groups are safeguarded and advanced in a meaningful and sustainable way.”
