THE Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has congratulated Zimbabwe on securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term and described the achievement as a reflection of growing international confidence in the country’s role in global affairs.

In a statement, the commission said Zimbabwe’s successful bid for the prestigious seat marked a significant diplomatic milestone and underscored the country’s increasing participation in multilateral engagement, international cooperation and global governance processes.

The ZHRC said the election was an important recognition of Zimbabwe’s continued contribution to regional and international affairs and would provide the country with an opportunity to influence decisions on global peace and security.

“This significant diplomatic achievement reflects the growing international confidence in Zimbabwe’s participation in multilateral engagement, international cooperation and global governance processes,” reads the statement.

“The election also represents an important milestone in Zimbabwe’s continued contribution to regional and international affairs.”

The commission said Zimbabwe’s membership of the Security Council carried immense responsibility in advancing international peace and security, promoting human rights, constitutionalism and administrative justice.

ZHRC expressed confidence that the Government will use the platform to foster dialogue among nations, contribute to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and strengthen respect for international law and human rights at national, regional and international levels.

“ZHRC is confident that the Government of Zimbabwe will utilise this important platform to promote dialogue among nations, bring peaceful resolution of conflicts, promote respect for international law and enforce human rights protection at national, regional and international levels,” read the statement.

The commission also commended President Mnangagwa, the Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and other stakeholders whose diplomatic efforts contributed to Zimbabwe securing the seat.

Zimbabwe was elected to the UNSC on Wednesday, becoming one of the 10 non-permanent members that will serve a two-year term from January 2027.

The seat gives the country a voice in the council’s deliberations on international peace and security, conflict resolution and global governance issues.
