The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of retired High Court Judge, Justice Moses Hungwe Chinhengo, lauding his pivotal role in drafting the 2013 Constitution and his lifelong commitment to justice, equality and the rule of law.
Justice Chinhengo died last week.
The commission said he will always be remembered as one of the three principal drafters of Zimbabwe’s current Constitution and was instrumental in shaping the nation’s legal and human rights framework.
His contributions included strengthening the Declaration of Rights and establishing the ZHRC itself as a constitutional body mandated to protect citizens against maladministration and abuse of power.
In a statement, the commission said his legacy will endure through the democratic institutions and principles he helped entrench.
“Justice Chinhengo’s commitment to justice, equality, and the rule of law has inspired many,” it said. “His tireless efforts in the constitutional drafting process played a pivotal role in shaping a framework that upholds the rights and freedoms of all Zimbabweans.”
The commission commended Justice Chinhengo’s dedication to justice and equality, helping secure the rights and freedoms of its people.
“The ZHRC extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” it said. “His legacy will continue to resonate in the lives of those he touched and the principles he championed.”
