THE Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has urged the Government to intensify efforts to fully implement disability rights laws as the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities today.

The day, commemorated annually on December 3, is this year running under the theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress”, which underscores the need for practical action to ensure that policies translate into meaningful change in the daily lives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

In a statement, ZHRC said the commemoration aligns with the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which Zimbabwe ratified in 2013, along with its Optional Protocol.

The country also ratified the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Persons with Disabilities in 2018.

“These instruments represent a paradigm shift from viewing PWDs as objects of charity to recognising them as persons with rights, capable of making their own decisions as active members of society,” reads the statement.

ZHRC commended Government for progressive steps taken to align national laws with the Constitution and the CRPD.

The Constitution also guarantees the rights of PWDs, while the enactment of the National Disability Policy and the Persons with Disabilities Act marked significant milestones.

The establishment of the National Disability Board was also cited as a notable achievement.

The Commission further acknowledged Government efforts through the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to provide social protection and educational support.
