ZIFA vice-president Kenny Ndebele has appealed for more corporate partnerships in football to enhance the development of the sport in Zimbabwe.
Ndebele said there is need to also focus on lower and developmental leagues, which form the foundation of football in the country.
In an interview with Zimpapers Sport at Vengere in Rusape, Ndebele emphasised the importance of partnerships in football development.
He was the guest of honour at the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Division One top four tournament, where Buffaloes emerged as champions after beating Masvingo United 5-4 on penalties in the final.
The tournament featured top teams from the region, including FC Hunters and Tenax.
“The association will continue to engage with corporates who are interested in developing the game.
“We are open to partnerships that will bring competitiveness to the league and enhance football development,” said Ndebele.
He commended Pacific Storm, the title sponsor of the Eastern Region Division One league, for their efforts in supporting football in the region.
“It’s good to see that this region has a title sponsor, and we are grateful for their support. We hope to replicate this model in other regions.”
Ndebele also highlighted the importance of lower leagues in football development.
“Lower leagues are part of the foundation of football, and we need to invest in them and we are encouraged to see institutions showing interest in grassroots football.”
Pacific Storm marketing manager, Kudakwashe Chiutsi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting football in the region.
“We have done our best in the Eastern Region to ensure that football benefits, especially the lower leagues that don’t get much attention.
“We will continue to support football, and we have plans in place for next season which I cannot disclose for now.”
The event at Vengere also saw FC Hunters receiving their trophy and medals for winning the Eastern Region championship.
Hunters coach Clifford Dzvairo said they had shifted focus to top-flight action next season after losing 1-0 to Masvingo United in the semi-finals.
“We participated in the tournament to win, but unfortunately, we lost.
“However, we are excited to prepare for the Premier Soccer League, which is our focus now. We commend the league and sponsor Pacific for a successful season,” said Dzvairo.
