Zifa keep Matongorere’s probe team a secret

The Zifa board ordered full investigations into the whole system after stunning revelations that Warriors coach Rahman Gumbo and his captain, Tapuwa Kapini or Esrom Nyandoro, did not participate in the process with Zifa technical director Nelson Matongorere alleged to have voted as Warriors’ captain.

There are strong suspicions that Matongorere cast the vote as captain or as both coach and captain. He however denies the allegations.

“The board swiftly set up the investigating team during its meeting last week and for security reasons, the identity of those members will remain a secret in light of the sensitivity of this matter,” said Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze.

He said their names will only be released upon completion of the investigations so that the process is not jeopardised.

A source told Chronicle Sport that during the Zifa board meeting last week, ballot papers were produced and they all had Matongorere’s signature while the handwriting on the forms was said to be his. The ballot papers included those of the Women’s World Player of the Year.

Mighty Warriors coach Rosemary Mugadza confirmed to Zifa that she voted.

“They called me and I went to the Zifa offices,” said Mugadza.

She however did not say who exactly phoned her or whether she did fill the ballot papers or she only submitted her list and someone then completed the forms on her behalf.

Media representative, radio and television personality, Charles Mabika has also confirmed that he voted.

He said Fifa sent the ballot paper directly to him.

The voting process has embarrassed the nation and Zifa in particular. The association’s vice-president Ndumiso Gumede said last week that there was need to find out what really happened.
