ZIFA Matabeleland North Division Two League starts on April 5 with high expectations for increased competition as teams battle it out to be promoted into Division One at the end of the season. Eighteen teams, 14 from Hwange and four from Victoria Falls, will take part in this year’s campaign. Speaking in a telephone interview from Harare on Tuesday, Zifa Matabeleland North provincial chairperson Denis Tshuma confirmed the dates for the league kick off and was optimistic that an exciting contest is in store and set to exceed last year’s when Kabwe Warriors (Hwange) and Trumus FC (Victoria Falls) were promoted to Division One.
“The league will kick off on the 5th of April with a full round of fixtures expected in the two towns where our teams are based. Judging from the off-season preparations by various clubs and the eagerness shown by the players of the clubs in the friendly matches they were organising, I’m more than confident that this campaign will be more competitive than last year,” said Tshuma.
Hwange Under-17s, Black Rock, Brazil, Kamandama Celtic, Ingagula FC, Baobab Rovers, Fire FC, Iwisa, ZRP Hwange, Moto Moto, Prison Eagles and Rufaro Rovers who were demoted last year are the clubs from the coal mining town to play Division Two football.
From the resort town a lot will be expected from the likes of Classic Luyando, Zambezi Lions, Amagagasi and Victoria Falls Tigers (formerly Mkhosana).
On sponsorship issues raised by the clubs at the annual general meeting held at Hwange Government Secondary School recently, Tshuma said that his committee had intensified their drive to seek corporate partners from Hwange and Victoria Falls as they seek to motivate the young lads in the lower leagues.
“As I said earlier we are seeking sponsorship around the clock and I can promise that this season, we will have three cup tournaments which I cannot disclose now.
“Besides the clubs have agreed to contribute a monthly fee each which will be used at the end of the season as prizes,” he said.
